What you need to know

Collecting & Representing Data is a key part of GCSE Mathematics. Build fluency with the method, then apply it to unfamiliar and multi-step problems. Data that can only take specific values, usually counted in whole numbers. E.g. number of siblings. Data that can take any value within a range, usually measured. E.g. height, weight, time. A chart using rectangular bars to represent discrete data. Bars are separated by gaps.

  • Continuous Data: Data that can take any value within a range, usually measured. E.g. height, weight, time.
  • Bar Chart: A chart using rectangular bars to represent discrete data. Bars are separated by gaps.
  • Histogram: A chart for continuous grouped data where frequency density is plotted on the y-axis. Bars have no gaps. Frequency = frequency density × class width.

  • Pie Chart: A circular chart divided into sectors where each sector angle represents the proportion of each category. Angle = (frequency ÷ total) × 360°.
  • Scatter Diagram: A graph plotting pairs of values to show the relationship (correlation) between two variables.
  • Correlation: The relationship between two variables. Positive: both increase together. Negative: one increases as the other decreases. None: no pattern.
  • Line of Best Fit: A straight line drawn through a scatter diagram that best represents the trend of the data.
